about

“I remember the gig at The Pit fondly, for reasons difficult to fathom. The venue proved to be just as announced, a pit. It was a damp concrete basement somewhere south of Market in San Francisco, painted gloss white, with no apparent ventilation and acoustics which promised to be hellish at best.
And yet, and yet, some combination of good will, good drugs, good friends and a band at some sort of pre-Half Mute peak, rehearsed and tight, produced a memorable show. Go figure.”

(Blaine L. Reininger, 2022)

“Originally a fan had sent the recording of The Pit concert to Peter Principle, who had been excited about it and had intended to restore and perhaps release it in some fashion. That was before the TM bandcamp page.
I think there are two reasons this concert remains somehow special in our collective memories. The first is because we all expected a disaster. As Blaine pointed out the subterranean cement box must have been an acoustic nightmare and also we may have been the first or one of the first concerts there, so nobody knew if anyone would even show up.  I vaguely remember a very steep staircase that must have made our load in more than the usual headache. But in fact, to everyone’s surprise, it came off more or less smoothly and, in the mind of the promoter Ben Buchanan, a “highlight” of his career. The other reason it’s unique is the repertoire of pre-Half Mute material we played that was rarely or never played again in years to come.”
